Rose and Leaf Applique

So, I’m obsessed with flowers, and have been since I was very young. I was the kid in the neighborhood that rounded up all of the dandelion puffs and blew on them (much to the chagrin of my neighbors), making a wish on each flower as the seeds drifted away in the wind.

Needless to say, flowers feature pretty heavily in my work. Most of the time, if I’m making something and think, “Wow, this looks great – but something’s missing…” it’s always a flower.

One of the patterns that I wanted to share was this rose applique that I’ve taken to adding to many a crochet project – you can make them in a myriad of colors, and they look very cute attached to a crochet project, in a flower crown, or just as a pin for your clothes!

Materials Required:

  1. Worsted weight yarn ( I used “I Love This Yarn! in Neon Green and Mango for the pink example rose)
  2. 5mm crochet hook (smaller or larger is fine, it just changes the size of the rose!)
  3. tapestry needle

Rose:

in rose color, ch 12

Row 1: turn row – put 3sc in 2nd chain from hook; sl st to next st. Repeat this until the last stitch, you should end with a 3sc in one stitch. Fasten off, and leave a long tail for sewing. Weave in the tail from your slip knot.

The rose should look like this so far:

It should be kind of curly, because we added so many extra stitches to one side!

Curl the rose up on itself…

… and use the tail to sew it together!

Leaf:

in green, ch 6

Row 1: sl st, sc, sc, hdc down chain. In last stitch, put 5dc – it’ll flip you around to the other side of the leaf’s center chain. Then hdc, sc, sc, sl st back up the other side. I like to work in the small tail from the chain in as I work up the other side – regardless, fasten off and weave in both tails from the leaf.

Rose and leaf! Thread the pink tail from the rose into your tapestry needle.

Position the rose so the leaf is halfway underneath the petals.

Like this! Now sew the leaf on with the tail from the rose.

Sewed together! I use the remaining tail to attach the rose to whatever I’m working on.

There you have it! I hope you enjoy this pattern – the roses are simple to make and add such a sweet touch to a project or an outfit.

I would love to see what you use the rose for! Leave me a comment, or post a picture on Instagram and tag me @craftchampion

Legal stuff: Please don’t sell this pattern or distribute it as your own. Feel free to make as many as you like, and you can sell what you make as long as I’m credited as the creator. If you would like to share, please link back to my blog!
